Lawn tool maintenance

Owning a home means that you are responsible for taking care of the lawn and all the property surrounding your home.  You most likely take pride in the way your home looks from the outside and are meticulous about lawn maintenance, but how long has it been since you have given your lawn tools the TLC they need to keep up with your outdoor projects?

In order to work properly, every tool needs to have proper maintenance.  It is in your best interest to keep your tools clean and properly maintained for safety as well as to save you money on replacements.

Check all your handheld tools like spades, shovels, rakes, loppers, pruning shears, and anything you use to keep your lawn looking great.  Give them all a thorough cleaning and dry them well.  To keep blades sharp and oiled, fill a pot with dry sand and mix in some vegetable oil.  Push your tools into the sand a few times and then wipe off the sand with a rag.  Make sure you are using an oil that is OK for the soil because it will be transferred from the garden tool the next time you use it.

Make sure your lawn mower is up and running properly as well.  Give it a tune up every few months, even if you haven’t used it.  If it has been sitting in the garage or shed for a while, you will want to drain the old gasoline from the tank and replace it with new gasoline.  You will also want to give it an oil change, check the spark plug, sharpen the blade and replace the air filter.  Consult your owner’s manual for instructions or any additional maintenance your lawn mower may require.

We hope you enjoy keeping up with property maintenance this spring.  We also want you to know we are here if you have any questions about your homeowner’s policy and how it covers your property.
