According to the San Gabriel Valley Tribune, Kenny Isago has owned Kenny’s Rod and Reel in Upland for 18 years. The shop has been running without much change, until recently. Due to a rent increase, the expense became too steep for Isago to stay in business, and the independent shop owner had two choices: close or move.
Isago, 52, wasn’t ready to give up all he’d worked so hard to build. So on July 5th, he decided to pack up his bait, tackle, rods, reels, equipment, and decor, moving from one part of Upland to another. Luckily, his faithful customers followed behind him, allowing the business to continue running.
When Isago was growing up, fishing became his passion. “In high school I used to dream about opening my own bait and tackle shop,” he said. However, he chose to attend Cal State Los Angeles instead, pleasing his parents.
Three years into his education, he got a job with UPS, trading higher education for a full time job, hoping to still one day open up a bait shop. However, ten years into his time with UPS, Isago suffered a career-ending back injury.
Yet, he still had his fishing expertise, so he took a part-time job at an Upland sporting goods store. “There would always be people coming in asking, ‘Does anybody fix rods?”‘ Isago remembered. He’d been fixing and building custom rods for friends and family for years and began doing some repair work on the side.
Word spread throughout the fishing community and soon, people were coming from across the state to have Isago repair and custom fit their rods and reels. Finally, he made his dream into a reality and began his own shop. He did very well at first, but with the opening of fishing departments in discount stores, his sales business dipped. Therefore, his service business became the shop’s draw.
