Teen Driver Tips

Being a new driver is a very exciting time. The days of asking for rides or waiting for mom to drive you somewhere are officially over. However, even though driver’s education is over you still have a lot to learn about the road. Every time you venture out, you may be in store for a new driving obstacle or learning experience. Take a look at a few of these teen driver tips below to help you get comfortable behind the wheel.

1. Avoid driving with friends. As you adjust to being a new driver on the road, it’s best to take your first few weeks solo. Driving alone will give you time to feel out things like highways, turning, and parking without the distraction of a friend. Once you have a grasp for the road, adding friends to the vehicle is fine.

2. Avoid speeding. Speeding can be dangerous and lethal especially if you are driving on an unfamiliar road. Also, fines are expensive. Remember that speeding tickets will have a negative impact on your insurance premiums. Keeping your speed down will keep your cost for insurance down as well.

3. Set your cell phone to silent. Driving with your cell phone constantly alerting you of something can take your focus off the road. No matter how quickly you check your phone, it only takes a few second for something to go wrong on the road.

4. Scan the whole road. As a new driver, it can be easy to miss cyclists, pedestrians, road work, or upcoming traffic. Looking down the road will go a long way because you will be able to spot out these obstacles early on.

5. Wear your seatbelt every time. Wearing a seatbelt is a law in most states and it also serves as a safety precaution. If you do get in a severe accident, your seatbelt will help prevent head injury as well lower the odds of you being propelled through your windshield.

6. Practice makes perfect. Complicated intersections and busy highways may seem daunting at first. However, you should understand that these scenarios will make you a better driver the more you encounter them.

Taking time to become an excellent driver is how you build long term success on the road. There’s no need to rush at becoming a pro. For any advice or questions about auto insurance, give us a call today!
