According to the San Gabriel Valley Tribune, one man is giving back by donating his time and energy to helping soldiers across seas. Bob Ricard began making his own handcrafted pens as a hobby and had no idea how much a pen can mean to someone, especially a soldier.
The 78-year-old Glendora resident first made pens as part of the Freedom Pen Project, an organization dedicated to providing pens to individuals serving in the military in Afghanistan and other active service areas around the globe. The retired firefighter specialist spends several hours in his garage workshop preparing pen care packages for servicemen.
He has made 600 pens since he joined the volunteer project. “You would be surprised that many soldiers don’t have access to a pen to simply write a letter back home when they are in a war zone,” Ricard said.
He makes individually wrapped pen care package with a thank you card included, and sometimes
he gets thank yous in return. “When I get thank you letters from soldiers serving in Afghanistan, they express more than, ‘thanks for the pen. That little pen extends into the thought that someone out there is thinking about them and cares about them.”
