The local community is always doing something to support each other, whether it is volunteer work, saving a life, or donating items. According to the San Gabriel Valley Tribune, the local firefighters gave back during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
For the entire week, about three dozen Monrovia firefighters are wearing pink T-shirts instead of their dark blue uniforms in honor of this important month. This is the first time the department is supporting awareness of the disease in this way, said fire Capt. Mike Cate.
“We’ve had three spouses of employees in our department that had breast cancer or are breast cancer survivors,” Cate said. “It’s a pretty large percentage … It’s important to go out there and try to get those regular exams. Early testing increases survivability.”
The California Professional Firefighters along with the International Association of Firefighters are encouraging fire agency employees to wear pink in October to show their support.
